How To: Open a New Private Tab in iOS 15's Updated Safari App

When you open Safari for the first time after updating to iOS 15, you'll instantly notice its new look. The search bar is now at the bottom, and the View menu has moved with it, now situated next to the tabs button. For tabs, moving between them is as easy as swiping left and right or selecting one from the new grid view, but you may get confused whenever it's time to open a private window.

Apple changed up how you open a private tab in this year's biggest update. In the past, all you needed to do was access the tab switcher to find "Private" as an option in the bottom left. Now, when you tap on the tab switcher icon in iOS 15, no such option appears. The option does still exist, just in a new location.

To find the "Private" option, first tap the tab switcher icon, which is the same icon you've come to know and love. Then, tap "1 Tab" or "[#] Tabs" on the bottom bar to open up the new Tab Groups feature. Here, you'll see "Private," which you can tap to open and browse your private tabs.

As in iOS 14 and earlier, these tabs save in this space, so you can switch back to your normal tabs with the comfort that the private ones will be waiting for you later.

Of course, you can always use a long-press to get the job done too.

For the uninitiated, you could long-press on the Safari app icon on the home screen or App Library and select "New Private Tab." You could also long-press on the tab switcher icon in Safari to see the same option. Both of these will give a new tab in the private window space versus just opening up to one of your current private tabs. This all works just like it did in earlier versions of iOS.

Note: Apple's iOS 15 is currently in beta development. A public beta will be available in July, while the final release isn't expected until the fall of 2021.
