News: Apple Seeds iOS 14.7 RC with Support for MagSafe Battery Pack

Apple released the iOS 14.7 RC (release candidate) today, Tuesday, July 13. The new update — and likely official 14.7 release — includes support for Apple's new MagSafe Battery Pack, adds two Apple Card Family options to combine credit limits and share one co-owned account, among other new features and changes.

Apple released this update at 10 a.m. PDT to both developers and public beta testers. While not unprecedented, this move isn't usual — Apple typically releases developer updates first, then follows up with a public beta three to 24 hours later.

You can see all the new features iOS 14.7 RC — and iOS 14.7 in general — brings to the table in the release notes below.

iOS 14.7 includes the following improvements and bug fixes for your iPhone:

  • MagSafe Battery Pack support for iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • Apple Card Family adds the option to combine credit limits and share one co-owned account with an existing Apple Card user
  • Home app adds the ability to manage timers on HomePod
  • Air quality information is now available in Weather and Maps for Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, South Korea, and Spain
  • Podcasts library allows you to choose to see all shows or only followed shows
  • Share playlist menu option missing in Apple Music
  • Dolby Atmos and Apple Music lossless audio playback may unexpectedly stop
  • Battery service message that may have disappeared after reboot on some iPhone 11 models is restored
  • Braille displays could show invalid information while composing Mail messages

How to Install iOS 14.7 Developer RC on Your iPhone

You'll need an Apple developer account to update your iPhone. You can get the restore image from your dev portal, then install it with iTunes or Finder. Otherwise, install the configuration profile, then update by going to Settings –> General –> Software Update. Finally, you can simply wait for it to auto-install if you have a dev profile and "Automatic Updates" is enabled.

How to Install iOS 14.7 Public RC on Your iPhone

To update your iPhone to iOS 14.7 Public RC, sign up through Apple's beta site, download and install the configuration profile, then update over the air. If you already have the profile, go to Settings –> General –> Software Update, then tap "iOS 14.6" under "Also Available" to begin the installation of the latest beta build, or you can wait until it installs automatically if "Automatic Updates" is enabled.

How To: The Fastest Way to Dim Your iPhone Screen Lower Than the Lowest Possible Brightness

In the dark, even the lowest brightness option on the iPhone can still feel a thousand burning suns. No matter whether you're in bed or at the movie theater, you don't want to create a distraction with your smartphone. That's why you might want a brightness that isn't readily available on your device — but luckily, there may be a way to go lower than the lowest brightness.

Using the "Set Brightness" shortcut, from Reddit user mrdude42, you can dim your phone lower than you could with the default brightness toggle in the control center. The shortcut takes advantage of a couple of accessibility features — reduce white point and zoom low light filter — which we've written about before, but the shortcut makes it easier than ever to turn them on with only a couple of taps.

Before You Begin

  • Make sure iOS is updated: While it might work on previous versions, the shortcut is intended for use on iOS 14 or higher.
  • Install the Shortcuts app: Download it again from the App Store if you've deleted it.
  • Allow untrusted shortcuts: Go to Settings –> Shortcuts, then toggle on "Allow Untrusted Shortcuts" to allow user-created shortcuts.

Step 1: Add the 'Set Brightness' Shortcut

Download the "Set Brightness" shortcut using the direct iCloud link below. Although the shortcut might not get any updates in the future, you can check out this Reddit thread for any new versions.

Once you click on the link above you should be redirected to the Shortcuts application, but if you're not tap on "Get Shortcut." In Shortcuts, you'll see a preview of the shortcut's various actions. To add "Set Brightness" to your shortcut library, swipe until you get to the bottom of the page and tap on "Add Untrusted Shortcut."

Step 2: Run Shortcut via Siri or Back Tap

Now, because you probably want to run the shortcut as fast as possible, you have several options as to how to run it. Of course, you can always run it directly from Shortcuts, but there are several options that are better and faster.

The first is Siri, which is incredibly easy to use. All you need to do is bring up Siri and say "Set Brightness," which is the name of the shortcut. As soon as you say it, the Set Brightness menu will appear.

The second way is through the use of Back Tap, which allows you to run many actions, including shortcuts, by tapping the back of your iPhone. You will need an iPhone 8 or above, running iOS 14, but if you do, you can easily take advantage of this feature. All you need to do is go to Settings –> Accessibility –> Touch –> Back Tap, choose one of the two options (double or triple tap), and then select the Set Brightness shortcut. Once you do, you can tap the back of your iPhone twice or three times to run the shortcut.

Step 3: Enable Zoom's Low Light Filter in Your Settings

Now that you know how to run the shortcut, there's one setting that you must configure to get unlock the full potential of the lowest brightness option in the shortcut. Known as "minimum" in the shortcut, this option allows you get dim the screen lower than Apple typically allows by simply sliding the brightness to its lowest. The option uses an accessibility setting called zoom, which not zooms into the screen but also lowers the brightness of the screen. However, you must first enable the low light filter in your settings before you can use it.

Open the Settings application and go to Accessibility –> Zoom –> Zoom Filter and tap on "Low Light" to enable the feature.

Step 4: Use the Shortcut to Lower the Brightness

However you run the shortcut, you now have a number of options to choose to not only lower the brightness of the screen, but also increase it. At the bottom you'll see the "Max" option, which is simply 100% brightness. As you go up the list, the brightness will decrease: 85% for "Higher," 71% for "High," 50% for "Medium," 36% for "Average," 10% for "Low," on and 0% for "Very Low."

The first setting on the list, which is "Minimum" is the one you're interested in. Aside from dropping brightness to 0%, it also turns on a couple of accessibility settings to help dim the screen. The first is Reduce White Point, which reduces the intensity of bright colors, while the other is Zoom, which zooms into the screen and dims it (if toggled on), for those with visibility issues.

If you tap on "Minimum," you'll first need to give the shortcut access to your Settings, but then the brightness will drop significantly, to the point where you may not be able to see the screen if you are in the light. In fact, you may have to go into a dark room to see what's on the screen, which is why you should only use this option at night or in a dimly lit location.

You should also be aware that the first few times you use this shortcut, it'll zoom in automatically into the screen, which is something you probably don't want. All you need to do is use three fingers to double tap on the screen and you'll be zoomed back out to normal, but maintain the extremely low brightness. After a few times of using the "Minimum" option, you won't be zoomed in because your iPhone will recognize that you don't want to be zoomed in.

Although you can increase the brightness manually using the brightness slider, this won't disable the two accessibility features that are turned on when you use the "Minimum" option. Instead, run the shortcut again and choose any other brightness option, which turns both features back off and increases the brightness.

How To: Disable Defunct Streaming App Buttons on Your Roku Remote or Upgrade Them to the Channels You Want

Streaming media companies like Netflix and Hulu make deals with Roku to have their apps featured on Roku's remote controls, but there's an inherent flaw with this model: the buttons become useless if the app no longer exists. So, is there anything you can do to change those defunct buttons on your Roke remote?

Unfortunately, Roku does not offer any way to reprogram or customize its remote control buttons. If it did, even if it were just for useless buttons for defunct apps like Blockbuster and Rdio and soon-to-be Google Play, there's a possibility that people would figure out how to use that to hack into the other buttons and change them to custom defaults. That would obviously make those deals it secures with each featured streaming app less profitable.

However, some seemingly defunct app buttons redirect to their replacement apps, so that's a start. One big example is that the HBO Now button will open HBO Max since Now no longer exists. But this isn't always the case. And just because Roku's never going to let you reprogram its featured app buttons on its remotes doesn't mean you can't make your Roku experience less frustrating.

Roku TV vs. Roku Player

When we're talking about "Roku players" below, we mean Roku's lineup which includes the Roku Express, Express+, Express 4K, Express 4K+, Streaming Stick, Streaming Stick+, Streaming Stick+ Headphone Edition, Ultra, Ultra LT, Premiere, Premiere+, SE, Smart Soundbar, Streambar, and Streambar Pro.

When we're talking about "Roku TVs" below, we mean TVs with Roku's OS loaded on them made by manufacturers such as TCL, Hisense, ONN, Insignia, Sharp, Hitachi, Phillips, Sanyo, Westinghouse, Element, JVC, RCA, and Magnavox. (Note: those links all go to replacement controls for your Roku TV brand.)

Option 1: Disable Buttons You Keep Accidentally Pressing

The only real hack you can perform on your Roku remote when it comes to those quick shortcut buttons is disabling the defunct app button from being pressed or lessening the chances you would accidentally press it.

To do so, take apart your Roku remote. Since not every Roku remote is the same, the process may differ compared to mine. If so, iFixit has a few guides on different Roku remote disassemblies you could follow.

For me, I took off the battery cover, then used a small screwdriver to unscrew the four Phillips head screws.

Then, I used an opening pick along the edges of the remote, all the way around, until the back popped off from the front. If you don't have a pick, a spudger, flathead screwdriver, butter knife, or similar object should work just fine.

Next, pull the pieces apart, and you'll see one side with the board and the other side with the rubber buttons.

Located the two little nubs for the button you want to disable.

Then cut them out. I just used a pair of electronics tweezers to cut and yank them out, but you could use whatever you have available that could get the job done, including a small pair of sharp scissors.

Afterward, you should have two empty spots where those nubs were. To finish up, reassemble the remote. Those nubs were what pressed against the board to initiate the button press, and without them, it's much, much harder to accidentally open the defunct app on your remote. It might not even work at all anymore!

To take this a step further, you can rub off or paint over the app's logo on the button if you're tired of seeing it, erasing all traces that it ever existed. You could even paint whatever you want over it (with oil-based paints), like a cryptic symbol or a tempting message people won't be able to resist pressing to see what it does.

If you don't want to take apart your Roku remote, there are other options you have. Mainly updating your remote to a newer one or one that has the quick app shortcut buttons you want.

Option 2: Get a Roku Voice Remote Pro

You don't have to stick with the same Roku remote you have for your Roku TV or streaming player. There's a new Roku Voice Remote Pro (model RCS01R) that might just be compatible with your TV or player. In fact, Roku claims that it works with "all Roku TV models, Roku audio products, and most Roku players."

From the looks of it, the remote features Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Sling as the channel shortcuts, but there is a newer model you might get instead that has Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and Hulu as the app buttons. Roku never explicitly states what apps will show up on your remote, only that "channel shortcut buttons may vary."

Either way, it also includes two programmable shortcut buttons for any app you want. You set the shortcuts using your voice (e.g., "Hey Roku, open HBO Max), wait for the command to work, then press-and-hold the shortcut button until you hear a success tone. (More info here.)

The next best thing to the Pro remote is Roku's Enhanced Voice Remote. It's pretty much the same remote minus hands-free "Hey Roku" voice commands, and it doesn't support as many Roku TVs or players. The price is the same, so it doesn't really make any sense to get one over the Pro.

Option 3: Get a Roku Voice Remote

The next best thing to the Pro or Enhanced remote is Roku's regular Voice Remote (model RCAL7R). It does not have any programmable shortcut buttons, but it has a voice button you can press so you can tell it to open up whatever app you need.

Just like the Pro remote, the regular Voice Remote seems to feature Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Sling as the channel shortcuts, but you may also get the newer model with Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and Hulu as the app buttons. It's always a gamble unless you buy a remote used or in-person. There's also a newer version (model RC399) that isn't available yet, and that may be the one with Apple TV+ on it.

Option 4: Get a Roku Simple or Gaming Remote

Roku also sells remotes without voice commands, specifically, its Simple Remote (RC483) for $14.99. But it also has its Gaming Remote (RC72) for $29.99, and that does have voice commands. However, both are more limited in which TVs and players they are compatible with, so they're not ideal. For example, the Gaming Remote only works with select Roku 2 and Roku 3 players.

Still, you may like the simplicity of the Simple Remote or the Gaming Remote's gaming features. Just know that these do not have any programmable shortcut buttons, so you'd be taking a chance that'd you'd get the four channels you want on the remote keys.

From the images on Roku's site, it looks like the Simple Remote may get you Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Sling, while the Gaming Remote sports Netflix, Spotify, Google Play, and YouTube. With the recent news that Google Play will no longer be available on Roku devices, the Gaming Remote seems less enticing.

Image via Roku

Option 5: Get a Hztprm Universal Remote Control for Roku

While there are third-party options like the Sideclick Universal Roku Remote Attachment that adds buttons to your current Roku remote, those buttons will not help you open any apps. But some third-party controllers can, such as the Hztprm Universal Remote Control for Roku.

It's a simple remote that works with many different Roku TVs and players where there's an infrared (IR) receiver, and the four app buttons are Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and Sling. If you use those apps, this is a cheap option to go with.

Option 6: Get a SofaBaton Universal IR Roku Remote

Another third-party option you could go with is the SofaBaton Universal IR Remote, which runs for $19.99. It's pretty much exactly like the Hztprm one, just with a different overall layout. The four app buttons are for Netflix, Sling, Hulu, and Prime Video, just like Hztprm's, so it really comes down to which one you think would feel better in your hand. Again, this will only work on Roku TVs and players with IR receivers.

Option 7: Get a Vinabty Simple IR Roku Remote

If you have one of the supported Roku TVs or players, the Vinabty Simple IR Roku Remote costs only $6.99 and looks just like the Roku Simple Remote. Its preprogrammed channel buttons are Netflix, Sling, Hulu, and AT&T TV Now. Like the other third-party options in this list, it's IR-based, so your Roku TV or player must have an IR receiver to communicate with the remote.

Option 8: Get a 1-Clicktech Roku Remote

Another third-party option that works with Roku TVs and players with IR receivers is the 1-clicktech Remote, which runs for $9.99. Its button layout is a little different than the others, and it has an ergonomic design for easier gripping and no volume or other buttons on the sides — all buttons are on the front.

It has Netflix and Prime Video as default app shortcut buttons, and it has two additional unmarked buttons that you can use for Hulu, YouTube, Roku Channel, ESPN+, Sling, or Disney+.

Option 9: Get a 1-Clicktech Roku TV Remote

Yes, 1-clicktech has another interesting Roku remote, but this one is geared toward Roku TV models (even though it says it will work with Roku players with IR too). It doesn't have an ergonomic design like the other one. Still, it does have shortcut buttons for Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, YouTube, ESPN+, and Disney+ — all apps that should remain in the Roku Channel Store for the foreseeable future.

Option 10: Get a Universal Roku TV Remote

Rounding out our third-party remotes options is this Universal Roku TV remote (model ROK-T1120), which only costs $12.89. It only works with Roku TV models, but it also works with older Apple TV generations. Channel shortcuts include Netflix, Blim, Cineplex, YouTube, Prime Video, Sling, M-GO (now called FandangoNOW), Rdio (defunct), Google Play (soon-to-be-defunct), Hulu, Vudu, and Spotify.

As you can see, a few buttons no longer apply, but those dead weights may be OK if you dig some of the other choices. This is an older remote, so it works better with older Roku TV models.

Other Roku Remotes Available

These are just a few of the Roku replacement remotes you'll find online. Browse Amazon, eBay, or another shopping platform for other options with different channel shortcut configurations. There's bound to be one with the apps you want that works with your Roku TV or player.

How To: Mute Any iPhone App's Notifications for One Hour or All Day with iOS 15

Notifications keep us connected to our apps and contacts, but sometimes, they just get out of hand. While you can make blanket adjustments to your notifications with iOS 15's new Focus modes, you don't have to go that extreme — if there's one app bugging you right now, you can temporarily disable its notifications.

The new update lets you choose to mute any app's notifications for one hour or all day. This feature can come in handy in a pinch — say your friend is blowing up your phone with Telegram messages while you're supposed to be focusing on something else. With iOS 15, you can simply block Telegram notifications for an hour while you get your tasks done.

To start, head to Notification Center. Just as in past versions of iOS, you can reach a notifications settings by swiping slightly left on a notification banner. With iOS 15, however, "Manage" is now "Options." Tap Options, and you'll see "Mute For One Hour" or "Mute For Today." Simply choose the one that's best for your situation.

You won't receive any visual feedback that the temporary changes are in place. To check if you have a notification muted, or to reverse the mute entirely, just tap "Options" again. Here, you'll see "Unmute" as an option on notifications you've muted. As the name implies, you can tap this option to unmute the notification.

Note: Apple's iOS 15 is currently in beta development. A public beta will be available in July, while the final release isn't expected until the fall of 2021. Anything shown in this guide may change or be removed during the development cycle.

How To: Improve Safari with a PDF Editor, URL Shortener, Bulk Image Saver & More Features on Your iPhone

Safari saw many new features and improvements with Apple's latest iOS update, including webpage translations, privacy reports, and picture-in-picture. While the updates were well-received, Apple's mobile browser is still lacking some very basic features. Thankfully, there are shortcuts to bridge the gap.

Safari Plus, a shortcut from RoutineHub user yazan414, adds several useful features to the browser. Simply run the shortcut from within Safari, then in seconds, you can turn any webpage into a PDF, download every single image from a website, quickly shorten any URL and share it or save it into your notes, and more.

Step 1: Add the 'Safari Plus' Shortcut

The "Safari Plus" shortcut can be downloaded for free directly from iCloud below or from RoutineHub, where you can find the latest version (currently on version 1.1).

After tapping on "Get Shortcut," you'll be redirected to the Shortcuts app. You can then preview the shortcut's various actions and add the shortcut to your library by tapping on "Add Untrusted Shortcut" at the bottom of the page. A Configure This Shortcut page will then notify you that the shortcut requires access to several of your apps in order to work properly. Tap on "Done" to finish.

Step 2: Use Safari Plus

On any webpage in Safari, tap on the share button in the middle of the nav bar at the bottom of the page. In the Share sheet that appears, tap on the "Safari Plus" shortcut to run it.

As you use Safari Plus, you'll be asked to allow the shortcut access to several things, such as websites and applications. To successfully use each feature, tap on "OK" whenever the shortcut asks you for access.

The Safari Plus is made up of a menu with various options that allow you to create a PDF, shorten a URL link, and download images in bulk, among other things. We'll break down each one below:

#1: Read Article

The "Read Article" option can read any article you're reading in Safari out loud. Aside from English, this feature can speak out articles written in French, Spanish, and Arabic. After choosing this option, wait a few seconds (or minutes of the article is lengthy) for the shortcut to analyze the article and read it out loud.

Warning: There are several issues with this feature, and there unfortunately isn't a quick fix. On iPhone 11 models, the feature doesn't seem to work at all, while there is choppiness in the voice on iPhone 12 models. However, you may have different results depending on your iPhone model and iOS version. The developer says the fix for most devices should come when either Shortcuts or iOS updates in the future.

#2: Make a PDF

The "Make a PDF" option analyzes whatever webpage you're on and turns it into a PDF, no matter how long it is. The longer the webpage, the longer it'll take to turn it into a PDF, but it shouldn't be any longer than thirty seconds or so for the longer webpages. Once the webpage is done being analyzed, the Share sheet will appear, giving you options to save or share the PDF(s). The best option for saving PDFs on your iPhone has to be Files, so you can choose the "Save to Files" option to name and save the PDF to your iCloud. You can then easily access it from any connected iOS device through the Files application.

#3: Shorten URL

If the URL of a webpage is too long, the "Shorten URL" feature can shorten any URL into a smaller URL, powered by TinyURL. Once the TinyURL is generated, it will automatically be copied to your clipboard, so you can paste it anywhere you want. A pop-up will appear showing you the shortened URL and giving you the option to save it to your Notes. Any link you shorten and save to your Notes using this method, will all appear in the same note, showing both the original and shortened URL.

#4: Download Images

Instead of saving photos from a webpage one-by-one, the "Download Images" option allows you to quickly view all of the images, and then save them to your device. After a few seconds, every image on the website will appear in a pop-up for you to browse through. You'll even see background images that you might not usually be able to download. If you only want to download a couple of photos, tap on the share button and then on "Save Image" to save it to the Photos application.

If you want to save more than one image at a time to Photos, tap on "Done" on the top left and a pop-up will appear, asking if you want to save all the photos. Tap on "OK" to go to the image picker, where you can choose as many images as you want to save to Photos. Hit "Done" on the top right to save the photos.

#5: Search a Product

The last feature in Safari Plus is the ability to search any product in a number of websites, including Amazon, eBay, Google, and AliExpress. When you tap on the "Search a Product" feature, the shortcut will ask you if the product you want to search for is copied to your clipboard. If so, tap on "Yes," but if not, tap on "No" and then enter the name of your product. You can be as vague or specific as you want.

After tapping on "Done," you can choose which website you want to search the product on. If you choose a website for which you have the application, you may be redirected to the app with results. If not, the search will be conducted within Safari.

#6: Settings & Exit

The last two options aren't features, but it's helpful to know what they do. In "Settings" you can send feedback to the developer as well as update the shortcut (if an update is available). And then there's "Exit," which simply closes the Safari Plus menu.
